Initial Checks & Configuration

Physical inspection, functional testing, and configuration procedures for IPX sensors

Initial Checks

While Osprey Measurement Systems' instruments undergo rigorous testing prior to dispatch, it is best practice to test all devices on receipt and prior to mobilizing to site to confirm no damage during shipments and to verify performance with your intended magnetic targets.

Physical Check

Visually inspect the device for any obvious blemishes or non-conformances:

  • Check for obvious damage to the IPX body and end pieces

  • Check the cable for damage, particularly at the cable entry

  • Check the serial number is clearly marked and consistent with the packing list on the box

  • Check the grub screws are present and in good condition

Function Check

Check Electrical Behaviour

  • Ensure no shorts across wires

  • Power up and measure current draw to ensure it is within expected range

Check Communication

Use the connection process to connect to a single instrument or string of instruments using a serial port interface.

Send command:

op ipx 0 list_uids

indicates the new line character, 0x0A

Check the UIDs returned match the serial numbers etched on the IPXs from nearest device down the string.

Check Measurement

  1. Connect to the instrument using a serial port interface

  2. Position a magnetic target along the IPX – make sure the IPX is inside the magnetic target and roughly central to its diameter

  3. Send command: op ipx [UID] measure where [UID] is the serial number of the device excluding hyphens

Expected response:

nnnnnnnnnn, mm.mmm, tt.ttt

Where:

  • n = serial number

  • m = magnet position measurement

  • t = sensor temperature reading

The magnet position measurement should be a positive number between 0.00 and 430.00.

  1. Take a note of the magnet position measurement, move the magnet up or down the IPX and send the measure command again

Movement interpretation:

  • Moving the magnet down the IPX should return a positive change in measurement

  • Moving the magnet up should return a negative change in measurement

Perform Checks Using a Data Logger

If you are using an open platform data logger (such as those manufactured by Campbell Scientific or National Instruments) you can use the commands to test the sensor.

Testing procedure:

  1. Place a magnet along the IPX in a stable position

  2. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines to take a measurement reading from the IPX

  3. Move the magnet a known distance and retake the measurement

  4. Confirm the output
