Ancillary requirements and IPX equipment overview including access tubes, magnetic targets, and data logger compatibility
The In-Place Extensometer is used to automate the monitoring of standard magnetic extensometer installations, typically comprising an access tube with end caps, datum magnet, magnetic targets, telescoping sections, and plate magnet.

Access casing is grouted into a borehole to provide a void for installing the IPX sensors.

The IPX may require configuration for optimum performance with your magnetic target type
The IPX operates by monitoring changes in a magnetic field. Therefore, the measurement magnets must be of magnetic type. The IPX will not work with non-magnetic systems such as rings used for induction-coil based systems.
Reed Switch Probe
A reed switch probe is required for initial survey/confirmation of magnet positions.
The offset between the tape measurement gradations and the very tip of the probe should be known to allow the depth of the base of the access pipe to be measured. This is essential for correct positioning of the IPX in bottom supported installations
In-Place Extensometer Components
An IPX system comprises of one or more IPX sensors, a means of supporting or suspending the sensors within the access tube, and a cable for communicating with the sensors.
Data Logger
The IPX operates on commands sent and received over an RS-485 serial bus. It has both an ASCII command set and a ModBUS RTU interface.
To interact with the IPX, a data logger must be:

Pre-configured to be compatible with Osprey Measurement Systems' IPX
OR

Configurable such that the delay, TX and RX commands can be user defined
AND
-
Able to provide sufficient power and voltage to power the required number of IPX sensors

The IPX can be configured and monitored using a laptop, field PC or mobile device using a USB serial port interface. Details can be found here:
Power Requirements
The IPX will function between 4 to 16V. An IPX that has been exposed to non-transitory voltages above 24V should be removed from service.
Boot Power Consumption
On powerup, IPX sensors are sequentially booted up one at a time starting with the closest sensor to the power source/data logger. This process takes ~100ms per sensor on the string.
Measurement Power Consumption
Polling of the IPX string results in sequential power use by each IPX.
Idle Power Consumption
Each IPX draws 4mA at 12V in idle.
