Foundations
Monitor foundation settlement, heave, and tilt with Osprey instrumentation to verify design assumptions and protect nearby structures.
Overview
Foundation monitoring tracks settlement, heave, and tilt or rotation of foundation elements during construction and long-term operation so you can verify design assumptions and protect adjacent structures from ground movement.
Common monitoring goals
Foundation projects typically focus on a small set of critical behaviors:
- Settlement of shallow and deep foundation elements across pads, rafts, piles, and pile groups.
- Heave beneath and around foundations caused by excavation, unloading, groundwater changes, or other construction effects.
- Tilt and rotation of pads, piles, and rafts to identify differential movement and developing deformation.
- Ground movement adjacent to foundations that could affect nearby structures, services, or retained ground.
- Correlation with construction staging, loading, and dewatering to understand how activities influence foundation response.
- Continuous data for alarms and compliance where trigger levels, reporting requirements, or risk controls apply.
- Back-analysis and design refinement using measured performance to improve interpretation and future design decisions.
Relevant Osprey products
Use these Osprey systems to measure the most common foundation behaviors.
OTS
OTS measures orientation and rotation along a line or curve to profile tilt and deformation of foundation elements, piles, and retaining structures.
ASP
ASP measures distributed settlement along a nominally horizontal profile using the hydrostatic principle, useful for tracking settlement beneath and around foundation footprints.
IPX
IPX is a magnetic-field sensitive probe for automated monitoring of standard magnetic extensometer installations to measure vertical displacement at depth beneath foundations, deep foundation elements, and pile tips.
